Delicate Innocence

I see the swallows

So acrobatic

So spirited.

I stop.

I wait for permission.

They fly around, but not away.

I move closer.

There are a couple younglings

On the fence.

I move closer.

They see me.

Turning their heads,

They acknowledge me.

I move closer,

And sit.

They trust me.

Mama worries, but they don't.

Delicate innocence.

I want to reach out and hold.

I want to stroke them in friendship.

I am in awe

And in the moment.

I sit in their presence

Soaking it in.

A long while later

I back away

A better person.

It was so trusting it started sleeping

Mama kept a watchful eye from a little distance

Semi-exotic Surprise!

I approach The Puddle.

It's below The Pond.

Mourning Doves,

Hyper sensitive,

Flush with a cry,

Emptying the trees and bushes.

Sigh.

Then a little sparrow

(is it a sparrow?)

hops and perches

hops and perches

its way to the water.

What is that?!

Surprise!

It's a new bird.

Green-Tailed Towhee.
